Halloween fun with your bird
Posted by Derek on Oct 15, 2009 No Comments
Today we have launched a new promotion: 25% off all bird treats! (Ends Nov 5) We feel even your birds should be able to enjoy in the Halloween festivities.
For Halloween, one of the most common things you can do with your bird is have him be a part of your pirate costume. Some things to consider if you are going to be having your bird on your shoulder as part of your interactive costume is: 1) Make sure they are comfortable on your shoulder 2) Make sure your bird is allowed to be where you are going with him 3) Be careful of loud noise or very active places – your parrot may freak out and grab on to your ears or some other part of your head you don’t want him to.
If you don’t want to be the stereotypical pirate, another idea is to be a jungle explorer. Another idea even dress up as a parrot yourself and have a “mini me” parrot with you (think Austin Powers).
Our Greenwing loves seeing people and we have been working with him to do a monster “rawr!” on command for a while – perfect for Halloween. So we love to greet the neighborhood kids while holding him. He loves seeing the kids in costume and the kids love seeing a parrot (often times it’s the first time they have ever seen one!)
As with everything, there are some things to be concerned about during Halloween with your bird. Learn more about Halloween safety ideas for your parrot.
We hope everyone has a fun, and most importantly, safe Halloween this year!
Our flock is growing, and migrating!
Posted by Derek on Oct 09, 2009 3 Comments
We love animals, especially our wonderful parrots. We love to spoil them with parrot toys, great parrot food and of course lots of love and attention. We are extremely happy to finally announce that we are growing our flock here at Hello, Bird! However, it’s not with more parrots but humans. We’ve been keeping this news quiet except with family and close friends, but we are very excited to finally tell everyone who visits our store that my wife is pregnant with twin girls due sometime in March. We are incredibly excited by the news and of course have to tell everyone.
As a result of this major life change, we have decided to relocate back to our roots in Southern California. How will this affect the Hello, Bird store? Not one bit. We are only an online store and our shipments are managed from our distribution center so moving our home base won’t affect anything at all.
If anyone has had parrots before having children, we’d love to get some feedback! Some things we’re concerned with are having our birds’ sleep disrupted by a crying baby and how we’ll have less time to give attention to the birds for a while until we get settled in to the new situation. There are probably even more things we haven’t thought of yet.

Poll: Bed time for your birds
Posted by Derek on Sep 10, 2009 1 Comment
Birds need about 10-12 hours of sleep each night (so do I). After a day of work is when we have the most time to spend with our birds, so they don’t go to bed extremely early. What time do you birds get tucked in at night?
Feeding schedule
Posted by Derek on Sep 02, 2009 No Comments
Birds can be just as picky eaters as kids. Usually, for birds and kids, it’s a result of what they are given as options to eat. I eat mostly junk food because that’s what I grew up eating after school every day (although my wife has helped me significantly expand what I’m willing to eat).
Knowing this, we try to make some good bird food options available for our two parrots. Although some of the exact foods we give them changes over time, we’ve stuck to the same general idea of giving nutritional pellets and veggies (basically things they don’t like as much) in the morning and then fruit and nuts in the evening.
We started this because we used to have regular 8-5 jobs and our birds spent that time in their cage. Even though they weren’t huge fans of the pellets and veggies, it’s all that was available for most of the day. We would come home to almost clean bowls most days. When they get the good stuff in the evening they make it disappear pretty quick. They also finish off their leftovers the following morning before we can change out their food.
One interesting little tidbit: I think at least 1/3 of our grocery bill is for the birds.
