Little Wing

Little Wing is a (mostly) Greenwing Macaw – some vets say he might have a tiny bit of Scarlet in his family tree as he is relatively small for a Greenwing. We are his second or third owners, it wasn’t quite clear when we got him, and he was born around June 2002.

Like every bird, Little Wing is a unique character. He is a lover, not a screamer – he’d spend his whole day just sitting on your arm preening without making a noise if you let him.

Besides his smaller size, he also has another peculiar physical trait: A feather on the end of his right wing that grows in upside down. He’s had this come in and fall out ever since we’ve had him. Usually when he is in a bad mood, it’s because this feather is bugging him as indicated by him trying to preen it constantly. A vet has recommended it simply get ablated (taken out and then the follicle permanantly closed), but we’re still a bit nervous about putting him under for the surgery.

To be honest, we weren’t the most thrilled with his name when we got him. However, he knew it very, very well so we just had to keep it. As a result, he has many nicknames including, but not limited to, “L-Dub”, “Big Red Bird”, “Turkey Bird”, or “Poop Machine” (to be fair, almost every animal in our house has the nickname “Poop Machine”).

Along with his name, he has quite a varied vocabulary: “Hello”, “Hi”, “Hi Bird”, “Shhhh”, “Step Up”, “Come here”, “Hi Big Red Bird”, “Oz!” (on cue whenever Ozzi starts screaming), “Stop it”, “No”, “Hi Rasta” (a bird that lived with us for a while when we had roommates), “Who Farted?”, “What?”, the beat to “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” said as many “dah”s, “Owww”, “Did that hurt?”, “What happened?”, “That’s good!”, “You like that?”, “Mmmmmm!”, “Rawrrr!”, “Night Night Bird” and some more I can’t think of right now. He can also do most of these words either at the top of his lungs, regular tone, in his “sexy” voice (mostly “Helloooo birrrrrrd”), girly-voice (mimicking Erika) or whispering when it’s time to go to bed. He also will talk in sentences, but it’s quite uncomprehensible.
